The summer is a great time to listen to music, sit back, relax and have a few drinks. Drinkify, a fun web app chooses the corresponding cocktail to go with your current song choice. Music from the artist even plays in the background. Type in Mozart and you get a recipe for:
“The Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart”
- 1 bottle Red wine
Serve at room temperature. Garnish with maraschino cherry.
Of course I try it with my favorite bands. Here are the results:

While there are certainly some out of the ordinary recipes while listening to artists like Taylor and Opeth, the website encourages to have a laugh and Drinkify responsibly.
If you ask your favorite bartender to make some of these drinks and they say no, well, don’t be surprised. The state of Texas TABC encourages the following safe drinking practices:
- Drink a glass of water in between alcoholic drinks.
- Decide on how much to drink and keep track of how much alcohol you have consumed.
- Don’t drink when hungry as alcohol will pass the bloodstream easier. Have a meal rich in protein before and during drinking.
- Don’t binge. Drink slowly.
- Don’t drink and drive. Designate a sober driver or hail a cab instead.
- Don’t try to drink when you’re a minor. Follow the law.
- Make sure that the establishment where you’re drinking has TABC Alcohol Seller/Server Certification.
- If a bartender asks for identification, kindly comply as this is part of their job.
- Remember that bartenders ensure the safety of its customers and will cut off anyone whom they think is intoxicated.
Drinking a cocktail, beer or any alcoholic beverage can have an impact to many aspects like health and relationships. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans says that, “moderate alcohol consumption is defined as having up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. This definition is referring to the amount consumed on any single day and is not intended as an average over several days.”
Always drink sensibly.

People say that you are what you eat. What you put into your body is one of the most important factors to consider in your diet. To be healthy, one must actually eat healthy.
With people being more aware of their lifestyles, different types of diets have popped up over a few years. We break down the few who have survived and the most recent additions.
Vegetarian

Jennifer Lopez, along with other celebrities like Jay-Z and Beyoncé recently went on a 22-day vegan diet. However, strict vegetarians completely abstain from any animal products in their diet, including eggs and dairy. Vegans are usually advocates of animal rights and avoid the use of animal-tested products as well as fur, leather and wool.
Vegan diets are mostly based of beans, grains, legumes, soy, vegetables and fruits. Going vegetarian believes that a person is removing all unhealthy food in their diet and also supporting ethical eating, and the environment.
Gluten Free

Gluten is made up of two proteins found in wheat, barley and rye. It produces the chewy quality that breads have. A gluten-free diet is treatment for Celiac disease, an autoimmune disease that attacks the stomach due to the presence of gluten and for people who have gluten sensitivity.
In recent years, there has been a rise in the popularity of gluten-free eating due to claims of its health benefits; however there is no research to back-up these claims. Jimmy Kimmel asked people on whether they know what gluten is, it resulted in this funny video.
So unless you have celiac disease, you don’t really need to have a gluten-free diet. The fad however has resulted in more available food options in supermarkets for those who need it. There are restaurants, and café’s dedicated to gluten free, however make sure that the food protection manager in the establishment is trained for such dietary restrictions.
Dairy Free

A dairy free diet is usually recommended to people who are allergic to cow’s milk or have lactose intolerance. Milk is rich in nutrients such as calcium, vitamin B2, phosphorous, magnesium and vitamin B12. BBC Good Food states that “Calcium is an important mineral involved in the formation and maintenance of strong bones and teeth. It also plays a regulatory role in muscle contraction and blood clotting functions.”
Most vegans have protested in the use of cows in dairy farms, if you support such, they have outlined ways on how you can go on a dairy free diet. View it here.
Paleo Diet

WWCE. What Would Cavemen Eat? In the Old Stone Age roughly 2 ½ million years ago, cavemen apparently ate whatever they hunted and gathered. The modern Paleolithic diet tries to mimic this age by only eating meat, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and seafood. The diet eliminates any wheat or processed food.
In an article by Time.com, Gary Frost from Imperial College London and his colleagues did some tests on how our ancestors ate vs. the modern Paleo diet. The verdict? “All fiber is good fiber, but if you’re trying to lose weight or control cravings, make sure you’re getting plenty of the soluble kind, which can be found in a healthy modern Paleo diet.”
No matter what choice of diet you have, don’t forget that it should be well-balanced. Check that you get all the nutrients that you need for your body to function.
